Personal Story

"Growing up in a small town in Minnesota didn't seem to offer much diversity.
Sure, two of my best friends were the only African American and Asian
American kids in my class, but we were kids and never talked about our
differences. That is, until many years later.

To fix a problem you must first be clear about what the ailment is. You must clearly understand the theoretical underpinnings to thoroughly create an action plan that will lead to the resolution of the concern at hand. In this session we explore, on a basic level, the concepts of discrimination.

Diversity 101: Reloading a new paradigm

I did a presentation on the high cost of Violent Masculinity. I can remember time dreading to go out side because at some point I was going to have to fight because I did not measure up to the other guys perception of a man. At 10 years old we were already playing out the drama that on gets more murky as we get older. What is manhood and how did Violence become linked with being a man. Think about the question posed in the presentation and write me back.

My words are still hanging in the air "there is no biological markers for Race but Racism is real!"

What is the cost of being Black in American?
Well it is clear that the overwhelming majority of folks still see a Black life is worth far less than any other. Oscar Grant was shot by Metro Transit Cops.

Ok, this how it is going to play out. Police felt overwhelmed because the 3 officers could not get the young man to calm down and they thought they had drawn tazzers, we are so sorry. Oh, by the way, no one is going to jail for this. That was Phase I of the plan.

Race is an illusion

I conduct diversity training for a number of organizations. Today I worked with a group in social services. We were talking about the concept of race. As I have for many training before I did my home work, looking for the facts, pro and cons of analyzing race. My focus was on deconstructing the concept of race in order the deconstruct RACISM.

What I found confirmed what I knew and understood about race. There is no biological marker for what we call race. There is in fact no DNA marker that determines one group of people from another.
